Another Look at Formal Mathematical Properties
نویسنده
چکیده
AMC introduced a paper by himself and MK on “Defining Mathematical Properties”. He said that CDs did not necessarily introduce the logical meaning of mathematical symbols. OpenMath should involve the logic community more. While OpenMath has Formal Mathematical Properties (FMPs), there is no differentiation between definitions and consequences. Also, some objects do not have FMPs, e.g. subset. He suggested a new tag, DefMP, which would be like FMPs, but the DefMPs would have to define the mathematical object uniquely. At least in theory, the FMPs would then be formally proved as consequences of the DefMPs. In the Esprit group, there were two objections: one that they would scare many potential users, and the other was that people might want different DefMPs. To the first, he answered that there were many features of OpenMath that not everyone used. For the second, he noted that signatures had been moved to separate files, and maybe this would be appropriate for DefMPs. This led to a lively debate. GHG said that placing the DefMPs in separate files was a move against the general trend towards databases. MK in particular called for genuinely usable OpenMath tools, e.g. for Reduce and Maple. Many agreed with him. [Irrelevancies deleted.] MK proposed that, in the light of the DefMP discussion above, which seemed to conclude that the DefMPs should be in auxiliary files, FMPs should be moved to a different kind of file. AMC agreed, but DPC did not. SB proposed, and

Implementing Euler/Venn Reasoning Systems
This paper proposes an implementation of a Euler/Venn reasoning system using directed acyclic graphs and shows that this implementation is correct with respect to a modified Shin/Hammer mathematical model of Euler/Venn Reasoning. In proving its correctness it will also be shown that the proposed implementation preserves or inherits the soundness and completeness properties of the mathematical m...
متن کاملA taxonomy of event time representations
Terms such as “simulated time”, “simulation time”, “virtual time”, “logical time”, and “real time” appear throughout the modeling and simulation literature as a means of describing the timing, ordering, and/or processing of events. Unfortunately, this vocabulary can become a source of confusion due to subtle inconsistencies in how the terms are interpreted. Here we categorize mathematical repre...
متن کاملAnother Look at the Hypocrisy of Chaucer’s Pardoner
For us, readers of Chaucer living in an age when appeal to religious passions and sentiments as a means for the realization of worldly objectives by some charlatans has grown significantly, reviewing the theme of religious hypocrisy treated in The Canterbury Tales can be useful in a way that it proves a helpful means for recognizing and dealing with the hypocrites. The Pardoner of the Tales is ...
متن کاملAnother Look at Function Domains
Bove and Capretta have presented a method to deal with partial and general recursive functions in constructive type theory which relies on an inductive characterisation of the domains of the functions. The method separates the logical and the computational aspects of an algorithm, and facilitates the formal verification of the functions being defined. For nested recursive functions, the method ...
متن کاملVisualization in process algebra models of biological systems
The language that Nurse wishes to see is a formal language that can be automatically translated into machine executable code and that enables simulation and analysis techniques for proving properties of biological systems. Although there are many approaches to the formal modeling of living systems, only a few provide executable descriptions that highlight the mechanistic steps that make a syste...
